Calling Suburbia...

Calling Suburbia...

A week or so after orientation, Alex would see a video chat request from "BOHara."

The call would go unanswered for quite a while, probably long enough that Brigid would think it was going to time out. But, at the last second, the call would go through, and she'd see Alex, trying to not look out of breath, hurriedly sitting down in front of the computer. His room, from what she could see of it, looked neat, if a bit teenager-typical with movie and music posters hanging here and there. Alex himself seemed to be well-kempt, with... was there water in his hair?

"Hey!" he said, grinning, as he settled back in his seat, trying to look like someone who hadn't just rushed all over to make the room and himself look more presentable. "I was starting to think you'd forgotten about me! How's home treating you?"

"Oh, about the same. Already getting hassled by my brother." She smirked. She was dressed much the same as he'd usually seen her at orientation.

Behind her, the room looked fairly modern, but at least one wall seemed curved. It was fairly bare, but there was a window.

"How about you, keeping out of trouble?"

"Not really any trouble to get in," he admitted. "The folks are in super-forgiving, not-pissed-about-anything mode. It's really weird."

"Nah. They'd have to be home to be up to something," he said. "I think it's finally sinking in that they're only going to have me around for a few more months. Don't want to be bitching at me about staying up all night or not doing the dishes and stupid stuff like that."

"Hmm... I could rock that look," Alex decided. "Right up until I made a big enough stir to get discharged. Not my scene, having a bunch of guys yell at me and tell me exactly how to fold my socks."

"But enough about life in excitement central here. What's been going on with you?"

"Yeah, about the same here, but with less success. Didn't get a lot of people's contacts, so I've been playing a lot of X-Box and finding out that at about four AM, a bunch of really hardcore guys in Germany dominate all the online play."

"Oh, that wouldn't be fun, they make sure to tell me what they're saying. Related note, I'm starting to get good at telling people that they suck in German."

"Or beat them. But thankfully I can't think of any situations where I'd start mouthing off to a bunch of foreign people I don't know." He yawned, adjusting the camera briefly as he leaned back in his chair.

"Not much," he admitted, a bit reluctantly. "And before you say it, the late-night gaming and stuff is because I can't sleep, not the other way around."
