I1: Priority Mail

Previously the lodgings of the late Lady Braddock, grandmother to Brian and Elizabeth, the Dower House fell into disuse for a number of years, particularly after Braddock Manor passed to Brian himself. Since the arrival of the University, it has been renovated into housing for faculty, staff, and students with special lodging needs.

"Some people I break, some I help. I won't even deny that I enjoy the former and I'm not claiming that I'm helping them. Norma broke because they took her away from me. I'll admit that I didn't know what I was doing then but she would have been fine hadn't they dragged me into that farce of a trial." she says, clearly sounding like she's doing her best not to get angry.

"I suppose you would have patched her up into something more closely resembling a functional human being?"

"Or would you have just made her a better puppet that wouldn't collapse while the puppeteer was away?"

"She was my friend. When my thoughts started flowing into her it made things right. Not just for me but for her as well. I don't know what it was about her, but by the time I got back to her it was utterly destroyed. She didn't want anything to do with me and there was no point in trying to recreate what she'd lost, so I left her behind. But I knew whatever it was that had made her special had to exist in others. I 'used up' a lot of people trying to find it, trying to understand it. Drew almost has it and you most certainly do. Something that makes you my equal, above the gibbering masses."

"Even if you don't approve, at least I thought you would acknowledge it as more than that. I'm just trying to find what I lost. What was wrongfully taken from me."

"Did you know that the judge who send an eleven year old girl to prison was one of my mother's clients?" she seems to suddenly change the topic, even her voice taking on an almost jovial tone.

"It's telling me what I already know, including the fact that your mother tried to get rich off your story after you were convicted."

"The point is, you're moving to something you're more comfortable with. Blaming others, in this case."

"I rather believe I took plenty of blame for this already. But I'll play along. Me and Norma killed two little boys. The standing verdict is that I was emotionally damaged by my mother and her clientele, psychopathic but with full mental faculties and thus culpable. I chose boys because of my internalized hatred of men and because they were the only ones I was able to physically assault. I talked Norma into helping me who was a victim of my 'forceful personality'. So far the official story. It's a comfortable one, if you can accept the fact that a child might be capable of murder. Want to take a crack at it, knowing what you do? But a fair warning, if you think I'm trying to shed the blame you're probably on the wrong track." she says, sounding amused.

"For someone not trying to shed the blame, you have a funny way of expressing it."

"This is, after all, what was 'wrongfully taken from you.'"

"I think that's the most honest you've been this whole conversation."

"I suppose that explains the sudden pivot as soon as you hit on it."

"They took Norma from me. And I may accept the blame but accepting the punishment is a different matter. If I did I do believe I'd have to turn myself in right now. They thought they had authority over me and they were wrong. I made sure they knew that once I had the chance."

"You can't possibly believe that we're on the same level as everyone else. They don't even begin to compare. One idle thought and a saint turns into sinner, powerful politician to sniveling fool. How can I compare myself to those whose very being is at my beck and call. You can't tell me you haven't at least glimpsed that possibility. Who they are, what they are is up to my decision. How is that in any way equal?"

"You're right, we're much more sophisticated now. You think some things are fundamentally wrong, at least stick to it so we don't have to dance around it. The point is, they arbitrarily decided on a punishment. Legally perfectly fine of course, though laws are just another one of those constructs that are supposed to keep a careful balance. I would almost accept it simply for the fact that they were obviously capable of enforcing their rules over me, as much as I may have disliked it, but they kept Norma from me and ruined something ephemeral. I didn't understand it at the time, of course, but she's the only one who's mind has ever been all the way with me when I killed somebody and it was magnificent."

"I thought maybe that was what caused her to be special, you know? But that wasn't it. It was something else that enabled me to share that moment with her. Which brings us back to you. You've been close to someone when they died, close enough to draw her into your mind somehow. At least part of you must have an inkling of what I'm talking about, even if you've never done it on purpose."

"If they died anyway, what's the point of restraint? If anything you'd be highlighting their last moment, elevating what would otherwise be a symphony played in an empty theater. If you're not going to play it the least you could do is listen to what they manage by themselves."

"Now who is changing the topic. And what meaning is there to death if no one mourns the deceased? There's an artistic beauty in tragedy. It's liberating in the majestic sadness of loss, of knowing that you cannot possibly be hurt any more because you have nothing left."

"And you're too puritan to be voyeuristic, despite the fact that there are things lurking in your nature that clearly defy that notion. Enough that they shaped your most prominent mental impression to that of a flock of carrion birds and made you take up the mantle of the Morrigan, if only in name."

"As much as I would love to say yes just to make you uncomfortable, it's just not the same without seeing your face. I just think it's in your nature. I'm trying to pierce the cocoon you've wrapped yourself in so you can finally emerge in all your glory. I'm filled as much with anticipation as you seem full of dread regarding what will happen then. You could always try asking your consort."
