I1: Priority Mail

Previously the lodgings of the late Lady Braddock, grandmother to Brian and Elizabeth, the Dower House fell into disuse for a number of years, particularly after Braddock Manor passed to Brian himself. Since the arrival of the University, it has been renovated into housing for faculty, staff, and students with special lodging needs.

"I really don't think you would want me to concern myself with your personal life again." she says, sounding amused.

That's around the time when the front door is unlocked and a couple moments later Nailah steps into the living room with an arm full of books and loose papers clutched to her chest.

"A shame but not particularly surprising, yes? Then again, the fact that you decided to call shows that maybe you just need to be enticed a little bit."

Meanwhile Nailah quirks an eye brow and looks at Sam quizzically.

"True and it worked quite well. In part because I think I wasn't particularly unreasonable in my demands. Just like I don't think this suggestion is unreasonable. You could find someone who is old, about to die by themselves, abandoned by everyone around them. Give them some company and peace of mind in their final moments. Or you could decide that any suggestion from my mouth is so tainted that you would rather let someone fade away into nothing, all but forgotten in some retirement home, simply to spite me at their expense."

"Please Sam, we're both telepaths and we both know that emotions don't work like that. If you don't believe it then go look at the ones who aren't even dieing but abandoned none the less. At best you'll find melancholic nostalgia in their eyes. I know you desperately want every word from my mouth to be wrong but that's taking it a little far. Think about it. Until next time, Sammy." And with that she hangs up, presumably to make sure the conversation ends with her words ringing in Sam's ears and not the other way around.

Nailah is still looking at Sam, miming a phone held to her head and mouthing the words 'Who's that?'.

"I can't say I'm surprised. Despite the fact that I didn't see it coming." she says, walking over to the coffee table and unloading her things on it. A couple loose pages immediately go spilling to the floor.

"There are some essays in there I need to grade. At least I hope that I didn't leave them in the Lighthouse. I took a small break from puzzling visions together though because Roland let me take a look around his collection. Did you know that there's an old bunker underneath the mansion?"

"It's not very clear but I found that it's easier if I just try to sense my own presence. I started because I kept being distracted by unlikely scenarios of dieing, especially back in that parallel world, but there's always something, even just trivial things like slipping in the shower and breaking my neck is something that could happen. Anyway, the point is that I've gotten into the habit of just avoiding those branches and learning to distinguish between the ones in which I'm still alive. They just all tend to go out in time. Far enough away that I can't see much else in them but enough to tell that everything grows dim eventually."

"I do. I really do. It was just sobering to see someone on the other side of that. And it's not a foregone conclusion. There's a couple paths I can see that stretch past what my power can reach and this is what I've been putting together to help me get there." she smiles brightly and maybe a tad obsessively.
