I1DT - Breakfast For Champions

Previously the lodgings of the late Lady Braddock, grandmother to Brian and Elizabeth, the Dower House fell into disuse for a number of years, particularly after Braddock Manor passed to Brian himself. Since the arrival of the University, it has been renovated into housing for faculty, staff, and students with special lodging needs.

I1DT - Breakfast For Champions

Miranda was in Sam and Nailah's kitchen, puttering around and making breakfast for them. She was humming to herself again and she kept her wings tucked in tight to avoid scorching feathers on the stove top where the bacon was cooking. She also seemed to be baking something as the scents in the kitchen attested to. The kitchen was kind of a mess though. Apparently some experiments hadn't worked as well as others.

"Starting to smell good," Samantha says to Nailah.

"Want me to bring some over to you?"

"I'm fine." she stresses, tail lazily flicking where it's hanging over the edge of the couch, the rest of her lounging on the couch in her bathrobe. "But that won't stop me from milking this for all it's worth and letting you two serve me breakfast."

Miranda got out plates, checking the oven and then pulling out a tray that looked sort of like an unholy union between a scone and an American biscuit. She gingerly tossed some on a plate along with bacon and eggs. "You made an awful mess in your work room," she commented, "But I got it mostly cleaned up. I left the scarab in a crate not too far from the flame since it seemed to like it."

"I have it on good authority that you accomplished what you set out to do, so you can rest easy on that account," Miranda said, offering two plates to Sam.

"Thank you dear," she says as she takes the plates, walking over to Nailah and holding one out.

"What authority, though?" She quirks a brow.

"She was, and she did. She may still be there. Cleaning up the blood apparently bored her and me giving thanks to Isis borderline offended her. I apologized and hopefully made it up to her."

"Your physical blood is still in a bin in the room. I didn't figure it'd be wise to just throw it out," Miranda said, going back to get a plate of her own.

"Well, you don't want the blood to set, you'd never get it up then. You're in no shape to deal with it. I thought Mum would be too busy worrying about you to handle it, and it didn't seem the sort of job to saddle the janitorial staff with." She gave Nailah a half-smile. "I do we want check on the telepathic work I did while I was in there, but I didn't think it was wise to pop back into the Astral again and risk testing her patience."

Nailah's smile falters a bit. It's not that she doesn't think Miranda couldn't handle the truth, but it's something that may not become relevant for years and could easily wait a couple years. Miranda has enough to deal with already without this. Then again, this isn't really bad news and she mostly just feels bad about doing something 'selfish' and having to explain it to her daughter.

"I..." she starts with bit of a sigh. "I tried to extent my life so Sam wouldn't have to watch me grow old and eventually die."

"Okay," Miranda said, munching thoughtfully on her breakfast. "At least you succeeded, in her estimation anyway," she said, her tone a little dead as her mind ran off through the future possibilities. Nailah had probably seen the look before.

"Nothing, just looking," she lied. "I'm beginning to realize I don't have your gift for time though, so looking for the fates of others tends to be very very hazy. At least beyond the short term."

"No, I get it," she said. "You've got that someone special and you want to be together for a while. It's a pretty human thing to want. And you succeeded, somehow. So that's all good." She shook her head and her tone returned to normal, "And you have a pretty nifty pet beetle to go with it." This would probably be a bad time for Sam to play poker with her.

Nailah glances at Sam with the hint of a frown on her face, feeling vindicated in thinking that it was a bad idea to tell Miranda about it.

"This doesn't change anything. This... this is something that I have been working on since before you came into our life."

"I don't know what there is to talk about," she said with a shrug. "You and Mom are going to live for the theoretical forever, hopefully see your grandkids and great grandkids etc, which will either be wonderful or terrible by the way, future's a little vague on that point. And the mere mortals will fend for themselves as they've always done. Have I about summed up the situation?"

We won't go into how low that chance is, Mum, she thought a little sadly. "I'm sorry, you'd think I'd learn to stop raining on people's parades. I believe that's the phrase. You should be celebrating," she said with a smile, "Can I get you some more of anything?"
