A Hot Breakfast

The horrible, rotten smell that erupts from within is outdone only be the sight that greets her. There, neatly arranged in a macabre mockery of elegance, are two dead bluebirds, maggots spilling from their open bellies. Centered between them is the small ceramic figure of a couple dancing.

The entire plate becomes a gout of flame screaming towards the ceiling. A burning arm reaches for her out of the fire.

Miss McManus made her way into the dining room. She looked jittery, as if she hadn't slept well.

For the first time that most guests had seen, her hair was down.
