I13DT - Ephemoral

[Narrator]

After a not-too-complicated emergency surgery Jane Doe is recuperating in Broomfield Hospital. By the time Sam and the Scotland Yard Inspector make it there she has woken up and is looking very confused. There's a bit more color in her cheeks though, thanks to a couple of blood transfusions, lessening the effect of her looking like Rebecca (or Victoria, for that matter).

[Samantha McManus]

"Good to see you've come around. I understand it was a bit touch and go, there."

[Narrator]

"Why am I in a hospital?"

[Samantha McManus]

"You lost a lot of blood, and were cut up rather badly."

[Narrator]

"And you were supposed to bring me to the afterlife. You are the Morrigan, yes?" she asks, sounding almost heartbroken.

[Samantha McManus]

"Is that what she convinced you was going to happen?"

[Narrator]

"She just helped me. She said she knew how to make sure you'd come and accept me..."

[Samantha McManus]

"She nearly killed you. She's likely put odd thoughts in your head, as well."

[Narrator]

"I was supposed to die. I don't... I don't understand why you saved me instead." she says, tears forming in her eyes. "D-did I do something wrong?"

[Samantha McManus]

"I don't want anyone to die for me, especially not helpless and tied to a tree."

"You can't trust her. She always twists things around to the way she sees them, to what benefits her."

[Narrator]

"But she said you'd come and you did..."

[Samantha McManus]

"Because she tipped me off. I was afraid she'd already killed you, like she has others."

"She's not my friend."

[Narrator]

"You're... not?" Even without Telepathy you could probably see the gears in her head turning. "But.... Oh I am so sorry! Please forgive me!" she says, finally bursting into tears.

[Samantha McManus]

"It's not your fault. She's... she's manipulative. I blame her, not you."

[Narrator]

"I let you down. I shouldn't have listened to her... I should have known she wasn't a believer..." she sniffles.

[Samantha McManus]

"...this is no offense meant to you, but I have trouble believing you were, before she found you."

[Narrator]

Her expression changes to somewhere around 'five year old being told Santa isn't real' and she just breaks down sobbing.

"I let you down. I'll do better, I promise!"

[Samantha McManus]

"No, no, it's not that at all."

"You have to understand how many people I've seen her twist. She doesn't care who you are or what you want. If you don't serve her needs, she has no qualms about shaping you until you do."

"I don't want her to have done that to you, or anyone."

[Narrator]

"I... I don't know about any of that... She just offered to help me. I was... going to take a bunch of pills but she said she knew a better way, one that'd make you come and carry me into the afterlife..." she sniffs.

[Samantha McManus]

"Let's... start fresh, here. What's your name?"

[Narrator]

"Becky Davis..."

[Samantha McManus]

"Becky, I'm not disappointed in you in the slightest. I don't think you deserve anything that's happened to you here, and I want to help you."

"What I need from you is very simple. I need you to talk to the police, tell them what you know, how she found you. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, or you need a moment to pull yourself together, they'll understand. What's important is that you're not the first she's victimized, and unless we can catch her you won't be the last."

"You're going to be on the mend for a bit here, but I promise I'll visit and we can talk. I just need you to cooperate with the detectives."

[Narrator]

She glances at the door. "O-okay... They're not going to think I'm talking to myself right now, are they?" And after a short pause she carefully adds "You're nicer and less... wild than I imagined, by the way."

[Samantha McManus]

"I'm... in a form they easily recognize."

[Narrator]

"Oh, of course." she says, weakly smiling for the first time since Sam came into the room.

[Samantha McManus]

"Alright, I'm going to tell them they can come in. Remember, if you feel the need to rest or stop at any point, they can come back later."

She starts for the door.

[Narrator]

"I'll try..." she says, slightly bowing her head at Sam.

[Samantha McManus]

She steps out into the hallway to talk to the detectives.

"Bell has manipulated her rather badly. It seems she was suicidal before this. Some of what Bell fed her was of... a religious bent. She's ready to talk to you, though."

[Narrator]

"Thanks. So we're talking cult? How much of the kool aid did she drink?" the Inspector asks.

[Samantha McManus]

"Not an organized cult I suspect, but Bell could have easily preyed upon insecurities to lead her to a desired result. In this case, the delusion that my arrival was to take her to the afterlife."

"Her name's Becky Davis."

[Narrator]

"Wasn't her time yet, eh?" he jokes, his coping mechanism for weird shit apparently being inappropriate humor. He doesn't really wait to see how his jokes goes over with Sam, puts on a professional face and steps into the room.

After about 20 minutes he comes back out. "Well, she doesn't quite seem to understand that she's a victim, which I suppose is good? We don't really need her to press charges to add on more years to an already ridiculous looking sentence. Feels wrong, but I didn't want to pressure her. Apparently she met her in a cafe in London, which tells us absolutely nothing, because she described her as a brunette in her early thirties. I showed her a picture of Bell and she didn't even recognize her."

[Samantha McManus]

"Aye. Some bits are likely to be unreliable but it is what it is."

"I plan to follow up with her after she's had some time to rest."

[Narrator]

He nods. "As usual, keep us in the loop, we'll do the same. I'll have somebody check out the cafe and see if we can find an eye-witness. How hard can it be to find someone among 10 million people who you can't even get a reliable description of?" he sighs, shaking his head. "We'll be in touch. Thanks again for your help."

[Samantha McManus]
