"You've admitted already that it will be painful," she said. Then she mimicked him, "Even if it will be within tolerable levels."

"You use euphemisms to either make me feel better, which I sincerely doubt you actually care about, or you use them to make yourself feel better, which is sad. The fact of the matter is you're a man who sold his soul for some mistaken ideal. And you can tell yourself whatever you need to get by, how I was created for a purpose and how this is all 'necessary', but at the end of the day, you're still mutilating a teenage girl and forcing her against her will to help you on some unnecessary crusade. And I intend to make it as difficult for you as possible." With that, she attempted to astrally project. She knew she couldn't go far from her body, she wasn't that powerful, but she at least deprive him of her conscious 'participation'.

From the astral plane, it looked like Will's head was radiating light, as he tsked at her.

"I suppose you're right. Treating you as a teenage girl is problematic; I'm getting soft in my old age.

We don't need your cooperation; just your brain."

Some time later, "Will" looked down at a panel, and swore.

"You! Technician, give the subject 200cc of telepathic blockers immediately!"

A man in a white coat ran over to Miranda's side, preparing a syringe, while "Will" left the operating room in a hurry.

As she watched "Will"s glowing mind leaving the "room", Miranda laid her hands on the mind of the man preparing the syringe. Here goes nothing. Her avatar morphed, looking more like the Archivist, as she touched the man's mind, tapping a few things to try to implant the visual suggestion that he'd already done as Quentin asked and all he needed to do now was dispose of the syringe.

Very satisfied with his work, the technician deposited the still-full syringe into a sterile receptacle.

"Now, is there anything else I can get you? I'm sure this will be over shortly."

Miranda returned to her body. "Can you tell me what's going on?" She asked sweetly. "He seemed really upset."

"How?" She tried to keep her tone calm as she monitored his thoughts, trying to make sure he didn't get too suspicious of her questions. She was loaded up on telepathic blockers after all. She wasn't a threat.

The man was a True Believer. Black Air had this all under control.

"A variety of countermeasures, designed to take out the most likely members of any rescue party, combined with standard Black Air elimination tactics. In an emergency, we can flood three entire decks."

As Miranda continued to juggle the conversation, she projected a ghost of her avatar back into the Astral. Her head was hurting a little bit, but she had an idea. The Seer materialized in the Astral and she brought her hands together, cupping a small flame in them. She just prayed that the rescue team had brought a good telepath with them.

"Why is he so worried about McManus and Weaver? They've yet to actually do anything problematic."

She "looked" over his shoulder, watching what he was doing. Maybe he should check the flooding mechanism... just in case.

That can't be right. There's still men down there. Best to countermand that order so good men don't get needlessly hurt.

The console in question apparently did not have that functionality, and now the dude was beginning to get a bit suspicious.

"Hrmmm...something's...wrong here....maybe we should up your dosage, to be safe..."

"I'm very sorry about this all, then," she said. You will release me and then you will go to sleep. She tried to let the thought carry the weight of the daughter of the Morrigan, which made her a little uncomfortable, but it was the one thing that made her feel powerful.

"I will...release you...and then sleep," the man agreed after a moment, working to remove Miranda's restraints.

First order of business... Miranda thought as she got off the table. She set about looking for a way to lock herself into the room.

After taking a moment to decide how best to lock the door, Miranda did so. Next, she looked around for something to restrain the technician with, since it was feasible that he might wake up and she didn't want to be disturbed.

Miranda struggled the man into the restraints, doing her best to keep him asleep. With that done, she ran over to the supply table, grabbing a roll of medical tape and applying several strips to make sure he stayed quiet. She moved over to the console and looked at it, trying to make some sort of sense. He'd come back over after checking the status on the flooding mechanism, maybe that screen could tell her where or who could have activated that system.

The system could only be activated from the bridge, it seemed, and only by people with very, very high clearance.

Then we just need to find one of those people, she thought, sitting on the floor and reaching out with her mind. She fully expected the bridge to be shielded like Mom and Mum's apartment was, but one could always hope.

It was indeed, I'm afraid. If Miranda were to be useful, she'd probably have to go out, action-commando style.

Or perhaps there was a less secure system she could access from this console.

Miranda got back up, poking at the console, looking for the intrusion countermeasures, which she was sure was a phrase she'd heard in a movie she'd watched with Kay.
