She offers Sidney a hand up.

There was a clicking sound and then a low rumble as the walls started moving in steadily. Hidden holes on the white panels opened up and large, sharp rows of spikes slid out.

The kids had a little time, they were moving a little slower than haunted house spikes, but not quite as slow as evil scientist spikes. Still, it would probably be in their best interests to get moving.

Sid gets back up with a little help from Emily. She's still a bit wobbly on her feet though.

"Go!" Cal urged them on as he, well, didn't hesitate to hurry the hell up. "If you can't pass an obvious test, you aren't any use to them, and they will just let you die!"

Alex, meanwhile, had other ideas. He didn't wait LONG, but he did stop to grab onto one of the spikes, trying to sync with the metal it was made of.

The spikes were made of iron. They were a bit rusty.

"This is almost TOO easy," Alex muttered, shifting to the very familiar iron form. He grabbed one spike and started to siphon off the mass, intent on drawing in the metal from all of the spikes as he started moving again.

Alex's plan worked great on the first spike!

The second spike exploded when he touched it.

You didn't think it would be that easy, did you?

"Takes more than some stupid tazer to take me out." she says, her speech still a bit slurred but she seems to be pulling herself together. "Let's g--yikes!" she flinches when the spikes explodes.

"DAMMIT!" Alex shouted, not... QUITE in pain, but close.

...All right, need some more finesse... Changing tactics, he started shooting out tendrils of iron to merge with the spikes to siphon them off that way.

Alex managed to get another couple of spikes with this tactic. It looked like he'd have the room cleared of the spikes soon.

Of course, this wasn't called The Room of Painful Death for nothing. The panels slid to the side, revealing what looked like extremely powerful sunlamps.

The billboard had changed. It just read "SHISH KEBABS!" now.

Shit shit shit that's my cue... Alex started running as he pulled the iron into him, filling his form out. Now, if I'd been bulked up like this before, maybe we wouldn't be here...

He didn't know exactly what the new gadgets were going to do, but... well, he had a good idea given the sign. He ran, ready to scoop up anyone slower than him in the process.

As the last person entered the hallway, the door closed. For a moment the entire group was left standing in a pitch dark hallway.

Then the walls lit up like they were giant monitors. In the soft light they could see another door just a bit further down the hall. Meanwhile, text began loading on the walls.

Code: Select all

Then the screens became a soft and gentle landscape. A field of grain, softly swaying in the wind.

"Congratulations on passing the preliminary testing phase. You should all be very proud of yourselves. Of course, some of you should be more proud then others."

"#0002 receives 10 points for disregarding instructions and saving your lives. She also receives 2 points for surviving electric shocks. Unfortunately, she loses 10 points for disobeying instructions and 1 point for being a poor example to the rest of you."

"#0005 receives 5 points for using his environment to his advantage. He loses 2 points for damaging lab equipment and 2 points for having a stupid face."

"#0003 and #0004 lose 2 points each for caring about their fellow testers. Shame on you. That is not what being a HERO is about."

"#0007 loses 3 points for being the sort of creep that hangs out with minors. The authorities have also been informed. #0008 loses 2 points for her obvious attraction to #0007."

"#0006 loses 10 points for being a crybaby. #0000 loses 10 points for panicking. #0009 loses 5 points for having a stupid hat. You do not have it right now, but I am looking at it and it is ridiculous."

"#0011 gains 3 points for following all instructions perfectly. She loses 1,000 points for her terrible taste in men. #0010 is awarded 1 point out of pity. Finally, #0001 is awarded no points, but he also doesn't lose any. He was depressingly average."

"The standings are as follows."

0002 1
0005 1

To any telepaths, Cal was... pure rage. Pure, absolute, unfathonable indignant rage. Panic was gone now (finally), and he was just absolutely pissed.

That's it. System diagnostic initiated.

"Classy," he said, scowling at the display.

"The next test will begin in three minutes. Please adhere to the following rules."

"Rule number one: Do not damage any of the intercoms or recording equipment."

"Rule number two: Once testing is complete, please exit the testing chamber promptly."

"Rule number three: Obey all rules and directions. Even the ones that have been kept a secret from you."
