The combination of heartbreak and utter cuteness right before him was like a teddy bear was getting a spike pounded through its head.

Fix. This. You. Great. Feathery. Idiot.

Ryan walked over to the door, very gently turning her around and pulling her into his arms and wings. "Hey," he said quietly, "Does no one ever notice that I freeze up when I'm surprised?"

Nina buries her face into Ryan's chest, sniffling.

"I'm sorry," Nina whispers, "I shouldn't have said anything. You're with Byrna now."

"I'm so stupid."

"Caught me off guard, that's for sure," Ryan said. And not giving her any real choice in it, he picked her up, moving her away from the door and settling down onto the couch with her, just letting her cry against him, all wrapped up in his wings still. "Bear's a bit... open, though, you know? What really gets me is... well, I mean, you're with Jess."

Ryan winced, stroking her hair a bit. "Ah... so it's like that, then?" He sighed and kissed the top of her head. "Just relax, okay? I'm not throwing you out. I'm not shooting you down. I'm just saying it's... not just as simple as just asking me. That makes sense, right?"

Nina laughs, "I know it's not that simple. And I know I should have just kept my mouth shut like I've been doing. I just—it's just so hard."

Nina holds on to Ryan like a drowning girl clinging to a life preserver, "You were always nice to me. I mean, more then nice. I know I'm strange and I have trouble with expressing myself right but when you looked at me, it wasn't like you were confused or disturbed. It was like you just understood. Maybe not what I was saying, but you understood what was behind it."

Nina keeps her head nuzzled in Ryan's chest as she talks, avoiding looking at him. Her voice wavers a bit, "I love you for that. I really do. And I have for a long time."

Ryan held her tighter. "And you always looked after me after I got messed up from whatever it was that happened, and you never told me I was an idiot for whatever it was I'd had to do." He smiled a little. "And so what if the world looks different to you. It's cute when you do it."

Nina smiles brightly. She hugs Ryan and just lays there with him for awhile. Enjoying the sound of his breathing.
