"Indeed," Nate said. "The Lord of the Rings is a classic, even if I had a hard time dragging myself through the Two Towers. I think in general I prefer the Hobbit to the trilogy. Not quite as epic, but a nice compact story."

"I understand that Conan is, well, supposed to be awesome, but I could never really get into it. Some of his other assorted things are sort of interesting, but still not my style. I like my heroes to be... heroic I guess."

"Oh, agreed. And Tolkien's prose can be a bit overpowering... or boring as my sister would say. And Tolkien really only defined his corner of fantasy. There are still authors who pull inspiration from people like Howard. And Lovecraft is big, for reasons I've yet to quite understand, though that's straying into a different genre entirely."
