What Dreams May Come

Like everyone else at this ungodly hour, Nailah was lieing in her bed and sleeping. Unlike everyone else though, she was tossing and turning, groaning at the dreams running through her head. Fuzzy and unclear but still filled with a kind of dreadful forebearance. But this time the images crystallize into a clear picture...

And with a bloodcurling shriek Nailah bolts upright in bed.

There was a hurried, but quiet, knock on the door less than a minute later. "Nailah? Nailah, what's wrong!" Becca asked in a stage whisper, cracking the door to be heard without waiting for an answer, ready to hurry in.

Nailah was still sitting in her bed, staring at the wall and panting.

"B-becca?"

Becca hesitantly headed into the room. "Y-yeah... it's me. Are you all right? I could hear you through the wall..." she said as she made her way over.

"Are you okay? You're okay, right!?" She still seems kind of out of it, like she's having a hard time focusing her eyes on Becca. Nonetheless she throws her arms around the girl, sobbing faintly.

"I- what? Of course I am," Becca said, taken off guard, but hugging Nailah back, settling down on the bed with her. "It's all right," she said, putting two and two together. "It was just a bad dream. Everyone's fine."

"What... no, but I... what?" she mumbles, her eyes having a weird flickering light in them. "Th-the metal men... and the children are running away and... and... blinding light and then..." Her voice takes on a not quite as panicked tone. "Why do you look so young, Rebecca?"

"Shh... just relax, it's okay," Becca said, feeling a bit unsettled at this. "You're... not all the way awake yet. Just take a minute, it'll be okay."

"No but I'm up, what are you..." She blinks. "...told us to stay away..." Another blink. "...get up, Becca, please, oh god no..." Her mood keeps changing around every time until the last one has her in tears, pleading.

"N-Nailah!" Becca was getting a bit frantic now. She let go of the girl, taking her face in her hands, turning it up to hers, making her meet her eyes. "Nailah! I'm here, it's all right! Nailah!" she said, louder now, almost pleading.

Nailah blinks again and this time the flicker in her eyes seems to fade. "Becca! Oh my god wh-what just happened? We were outside... but it was all wrong and e-everyone looked so old a-and then..." she chokes up again.

Becca hugged her tight again. "I... I don't know, I just... I was sleeping, and then I heard you yell, and I came and you were sitting here and you were saying weird things, and... I don't know, but it's all right. I-it was just a dream, you're okay..."

"It was so real..." she mumbles, not letting go of Becca. "But you're here and not... not... You're here." she repeats herself instead of finishing that sentence. But that feeling of loss isn't the only one that keeps echoing through Nailah's head and so she whispers something that has at least some of it's roots in what she just experienced. "I love you, Becca..."

Becca was in the middle of murmuring reassurances. "Shh... it's all right, I'm hear. We're all okay, it's you what?"

She... she couldn't have just said that. I... but she... we... I... um... she tried to think, as her mind seemed to loop around toward a critical meltdown, reflexive tears filling her eyes at what she'd thought she heard.

Nailah looks about as surprised at what she just said, to be quite honest and she's not really sure what so say next.

"I... I mean... it just... in the dream..." she mumbles awkwardly.

Becca nodded, feeling the awkwardness setting in, so she grabbed at the first conversation point she could get her hands on. "It felt that real?" she asked, for all the world sounding like she understood how that went.

Becca only barely loosened her grip on Nailah, enough to turn her head for a second and kiss her cheek. "If you say it was real enough to freak out like that, then it was real enough to freak out like that. It's okay."

Samantha had her own bad experiences with being woken by someone else's nightmare, and this one had been no exception. Still, she'd managed to resume her own form, after some difficulty.

Thus, though she looked rather worse for wear, she now poked her head through the doorway.

"I'm... I'm sorry. I couldn't come right away..."

Bcca kept herself from sighing, slowly disengaging herself and starting to slide out from between the two, She wasn't going to be needed now, after all.

Becca was... rather conflicted. She was, all at once, feeling weird from the far-too-sudden 'I love you,' feeling disappointed (or even hurt) that she evidently didn't mean it, feeling glad for Sam's sudden distraction from the awkward moment, and feeling irrationally irritable for the intrusion. All of which basically added up to her not being fast enough to get out before Sam pulled her back in.

Nailah doesn't know if she should be embarrassed about Sam just blurting that out, but she sure feels guilty about the dream somehow so she just nods.

Nailah reaches out and takes Becca's hand into her own. She's not about to yank her over but there's a slight tug, the intent of which is being mirrored in her eyes as the sphinxling looks at the pale girl.

Becca almost resisted, but she couldn't pull her eyes from Nailah's, and the intent was too much for her to deny. She squeezed Nailah's hand, letting herself get pulled closer. ...Was just a dream...

For the moment Nailah seems to forget that Sam is there. Or maybe she doesn't care about awkward right now. Either way she pulls Becca into her arms and kisses her.
