What Dreams May Come

Becca's eyes filled up again as she squeezed them shut, kissing Nailah back... and that was when it was too much for her. She didn't move away, but she broke the kiss and turned, trying not to let it be too obvious that she was crying, even if it was completely obvious from her voice. "It was just a dream... Don't say that when we know you're going to come to your senses in the morning," she whimpered, not knowing why they were making such a big deal out of a dream. Hell, she died all the time in her own dreams.

"Becca no, it... It's so hard to explain but it didn't feel like a dream. I was there, I... I was with you and then suddenly I wasn't and... and... I don't care if what I felt wasn't 'real' because that's how I want to feel and that's what counts. You count..."

"Of course I don't," Becca answered, not meeting Nailah's eyes. "It was just a bad dream... You'll feel better in the morning."

"I feel better now. Because you're here with me." she says softly, gently putting her hand against Becca's cheek, wiping away one of the tears that had rolled down with her thumb.

Becca really didn't have a reply for that one. She just leaned into Nailah, burying her head against her shoulder and hugging the little sphinxling. Just don't think. Just stop thinking. Thinking won't help right now. Reality won't make things better right now...

Without seeing Becca's face, it would probably take Nailah a moment to realize she wasn't choked up, but was actually unsure if she really did want to hear the good parts. Finally, though, she nodded against her shoulder.

Becca blinked, her apprehension forgotten for a moment. "A whip?" she asked, backing up a little to look at Nailah in disbelief. "Why did I have a whip?"

"I don't know... But you did. We were, like, defending the school. You looked pretty badass." she smiles. She figures Becca probably just thinks she's making stuff up and she's not even sure why she was so convinced that this was somehow the actual future, but she just wants to make her friend feel better.

Becca looked at her skeptically. "And people had time to say all that while there was general panic and mayhem going on," she said dryly, though there was the hint of a smile tugging the corners of her lips.

Becca looked at her straight-faced for a minute before snorting out a laugh and hugging her again. "I'm not sure what parts of that were just to make me feel better, but thanks..."

Becca bit her lip as she looked down for a second. She probably believes that right now, after a dream like that... "Thanks, I... thanks," she half-whispered, unable to really say more as she squeezed Nailah's hand.
