"Aye. They could practically be her daughters. I know they aren't, but it's bloody weird."

"Immitation is the creepiest form of flattery?" Mike suggested with a smirk.

"Yeah, but... well, who cares what she likes."

"So... did we hit the limit of how much you want to talk about it?" he asked, getting the conversation off of the divergence. "Or did you want some more help wrapping your head around it all?"

"There's no harm in talking about it some more. I'm sorry if you thought I was trying to steer you away."

"And I mean... well, you've been here long enough. You know how Becca and I usually hang out."

Mike nodded, smiling slightly. "Yeah, that much I've noticed," he said. "You think she isn't going to want to hang out with you as much now?" he guessed.

Which really, had been pretty much along the lines of what Mike had been trying to say, and he nodded. "Like, to the 'would take a bullet for you' level. So if you're worried about her dropping you now that they're... ah... 'getting along,' I don't think you need to worry."

"That was going to be my next point, I think," Mike said with a smile. "Look at it this way... they're both your friends, and now you don't have to worry about some guy splitting the group up. At least there's not going to be any awkward 'have to get to know their boyfriends so we can still spend time together' stuff going on."

Mike shrugged. "Well, it was going to happen sooner or later, right?" Can't believe it wasn't 'sooner', really... "And now you won't have to worry so much about her being lonely when you do. And... well, I mean, I can't see you as one to not make time for your friends just because you're dating someone. Or her. So you should be all right."

"Oh, now you've got me paranoid about it again," she said as she stuck out her tongue at him.

"Of course, you probably think the only reason I talk to you is to dump roommate drama on you, now."

"Don't think the thought hasn't crossed my mind. Not to mention it would get out of the way all the stupid stuff I shouldn't have to say, like 'No, I won't use my power to make someone like you or to make your girlfriend forget the stupid shit you said last night'."

He chuckled. "I'm sure it helped, though. You see how a few people react to things, you can figure it out mostly from there." He looked over at her again, smirking. "So... that isn't just why you talk to me?"

"And not just because when we're together we get the combined benefit of both of us screening everyone else out?" he added with a smirk.

He hesitated. "Don't go thinking I'm that nice, though," he admitted reluctantly.

Mike smiled, a little embarassed, and didn't press the subject. "So... Do you want to give the roommates some alone time and grab something to eat?" he asked. "I don't have anything planned until... well, never, so if you wanted..."

"That sounds like a plan. Know any good places around here? I'm afraid Becca and I mostly stuck to the ice cream shop," she admitted sheepishly.

"A few times. It's not really disturbing or anything, it shouldn't be hard." He smiled at her. "So what do you say, want to risk being seen in public with me outside the safety of 'we just left class'?" he joked.

The ride on the buss was uneventful enough, with the two of them chatting idly about classes and teachers and school gossip. When the got out, though, Mike was quiet as he looked around. "All right... anything you like or don't like, just so we can narrow things down?" he said, looking down the downtown Salem street.

"Good," Mike said. "All right... most of the good places are right along this street, right? So what we do... just stand outside the first place to get a feel for it. Open your mind, and you take a few minutes to filter out the people who are eating from the servers. That might be easier for me, I don't know, but I can show you how to do it."

"Well, here goes nothing..."

She reached out with her mind, getting a feel with it. She slipped a little once or twice, her features shifting momentarily, an odd lock of hair, though she recovered fairly quickly.

Mike could feel, more than see, her problems, and he opened his own mind along with her, focusing on showing her how to pick out what they wanted to know out of the nonsense they didn't care about, as well as blocking out anything else from getting into her usually strictly-maintained mental shields. It was, as he expected, easier with the two of them instead of alone, and it didn't take much time for them to have a good idea of how good there restaurant was based on how satisfied the customers were.
