Renko's Wonder Emporium

The British Empire never fell. Steam powered technology continued to advance. Zeppelins won out over airplanes. Mutants are considered second-class citizens by the empire and many resort to piracy to survive. These mutant pirates are hunted not only by the military, but also by a zealous religious order known as The Purifiers.

Renko's Wonder Emporium

Postby David Renko » Fri Oct 14, 2011 9:56 pm

On one side of the floating island was an industrial complex made up of a dry dock and large hangar. The dry dock itself had airships of various makes in various states of disrepair. The sign out front was simple the word Chronos and a cogwheel with the symbol for infinity in the center space. Inside the hangar a man was staring at a series of designs on the wall in the center of the hangar was what looked like a considerably smaller and strange looking airship.

The man was muttering something to himself something that sounded like ' problems with fuel densities'.

Sometime after taking Robert Bowen to see Nate and finishing shopping, Jack went to check out the supposed genius ship-builder's hangar. His jaw dropped as he laid eyes upon the strange looking airship.

"It's like a bird..." he said in awe.

"Bird? Oh, yes," Renko said turning towards Jack, "Ah, Mr. Jack. The design is actually heavily influenced by birds. The trouble is getting it into the sky."

"Well yes, but the design! The design is inspired!" he said enthusiastically as he scrutinized the craft.

"Need lighter fuel. Coal too heavy."

Renko watched Jack closely around his baby can't have anything happening to it before it even gets in the air after all.

"That is the quandary I've been dealing with," Renko smiled. "I've been working on a few different ideas. Super dense coal being one, I also obtained a sample of the latest pyroclastic gel, and a few other things."

"But if she does gets airborne she'll be the fastest thing that's ever flown the skies."

"I've been working on a new kind of fuel cell," he grinned before frowning dejectedly, "Plans only. Captain Ghost won't let me build it."

"I imagine there's a good reason for that," Renko with a chuckle. "I'd be willing to take a look at them. Let you know if they'll blow up in my face."

"Certainly," Renko said, "This is my life's work after all and my facilities are more than capable of fixing the Wolf with or without my assistance.

Though in her current state that might take some time."

Renko grabbed a metal cog from his belt and handed it to Jack. Inscribed on it was the number 13.

"Give that to your captain it has his dock number on it, ships without them tend to be used for spare parts," Renko smiled. "A crew will be on stand by to inspect your ship and provide me with a list of things that need to be done."

The next day...

With a pair of pirates as escorts, Jack returned.

Renko was talking to a couple people dressed in what looked like work clothes. The tapped the clip board several times in different places. When the two workmen saw the escort for Jack they almost immediately interposed themselves between their boss and the approaching pirates.

"Your escort is making my employees nervous, Jack," Renko said easily, "As are the rumors floating around that you killed somebody in a fit of anger."

"I assure you, you're in no danger from me. And... I'm not allowed outside the ship without them..." he said apologetically.

"They can wait outside though," he said, making an 'I told you so' gesture to his escorts. They grunted and stepped out.

"You two have plenty of work to do."

"But sir t-"

"Does working double shifts getting the new ship into shape sound pleasyant?"

"No sir."

And with that the two workmen left though they looked back at Renko and Jack more than once.

"They are a bit...uneasy when Paladin and Jormungandr aren't here, but that is neither here nor there. You brought the designs I take it?"

"Good, good," Renko said, "This way."

Renko began walking towards a rather ornate looking door. His form blurred for a moment and the door began opening slowly inside was quite likely the most well equipped workshop outside of the Brittanian empire. The walls were covered in designs of various different items, and more than one work bench had a half complete item on it. There was what looked like powered armor, weapons, engines, and a few things that seemed to have no discernible purpose whatsoever.

"I've cleared an area for us to work on your design."

Renko smiled and stopped in front of an empty work bench. It was immaculate compared to the other work benches. Tools carefully arranged, requisition forms stacked neatly, and so on.

"I'm fortunate in many ways," Renko said, "My mutation allowed me to make a considerable amount of money by repairing any ship that came into my original shop. Though the current climate towards mutants has in many ways caused business to sink, literally in the case of my previous workshop. Though a grateful Brittanian officer allowed me to evacuate the facility before he began shelling it."

"I recovered a memory of that man's captain killing my parents," he said sadly.

"I... I didn't want to kill him... he probably wasn't even there... but when he brought up his captain coming to find me if he was harmed... I lost it..." he sighed guiltily.

"On to business then?" he asked, beginning to flip his sketchbook to the right page. Renko would catch a glimpse of several rather ambitious designs.

He found the right page. Across the spread was drawn a sophisticated device designed to provide a great deal of power from very little fuel.

"Here we are."

"Coal, actually. The trick is not to replace the fuel source, but rather the agent of momentum. Steam, but not water."

Renko would see that the steam and liquid was in an enclosed system, being constantly recycled.

"The materials would need to be made of something a bit stronger than the typical fuel system," Renko said, "Otherwise it probably wouldn't last more than a few cycles."

"The system is small enough that I might be able to get enough vibranium to build it."
