"Something...something like that. It's just...old," he said, lamely.

"I'd rather not talk about it is a perfectly fine answer, Roland." she says, carefully putting the dress back down.

"No, I..." Roland said, taking a deep breath and sighing. "I'm sorry. I'm not used to people....going through these things. I'm sorry, I'm just...uncomfortable."

"Oh, believe me, I understand. And I only have three decades worth of things I wouldn't want people digging through. If you get a chance, ask some people about the time I thought I was a teenager again."

"Now, how did that work out?" Roland smiled, deftly trying to change the subject to Nailah's past rather than his own.

"No, more that I loathed the idea of a preordained future and it felt like that's what they were trying to drag me into."

"Teenagers like having a choice and I didn't. Now I can appreciate the certainty it provides but when I was 15? I hated it. I'd wanted an awesome power, something cool and powerful. Instead I got a plan laid out in front of me."

"My..." Roland said, pausing and taking a deep breath.

"My father and elder sister were both seers. And I have suffered because of them."

"I'm sorry to hear that. I like to think that I'm handling the burden of my gift better, but I'm not entirely sure that's true sometimes. It lends itself only too well to a worldview in which the end justifies the means."

"It's not a noble thing. It's not...not a matter of seeing the outcome and deciding to bear with temporary hardship. It can be...a selfish thing. A way of furthering your own life at the expense of others..."

"Sometimes the temporary hardship is someone else's but no, I understand what you mean. Part of me wants to think there's some profound insight I could provide that grants you a new perspective but the truth is I don't know your family and they may have just been abusing their gift."

"Because you seem like you could use a sympathetic ear. And also because I might be able to learn from other's mistakes. My way of doing things is already having an effect on Miranda. I've seen where it could lead and I'd rather it didn't. I wouldn't want her to feel about me the way you seem to feel about your family."
