Oct 2: Well That Sucked

Built with a generous grant from one of the University's benefactors, this clinic serves both the University and the incoming students of the Institute. More severe injuries are stabilized here first, then medevaced to nearby Muir Island.

Oct 2: Well That Sucked

Postby John Hino » Tue May 19, 2015 10:04 am

John's eyes opened and he looked around in confusion before realizing he was in the infirmary.

How...

Memories slowly took shape; the kidnapping, the fight, the victory. The last thing he remembered clearly was Will telling him that Mizuki was safe. Then, disjointed and half-remembered images from drifting in and out of consciousness.

"It's over," he mumbled with a sigh of relief, "Thank God."

"It certainly is!" a cheerful voice comes from... the lamp on his nightstand? It even swings it's head in his direction before realizing it's shining light directly in his face, at which the lamp swings down again.

He sat up quickly and looked at the lamp. He hoped he was just dreaming.

"What? Don't you recognize your good friend Taiki? For shame!" The lamp melodramatically flops over until it's mostly hanging over the side of the nightstand.

"Taiki is an obake, brush up on the culture of your ancestors. Wait why am I talking in the third person now? Point is, it's me and right now I'm a Desk Lantern, thank you very much."

"Fine, then I won't congratulate you on defeating the Spider-Lady and banishing her back to her realm of moldy bones. See if I care." the lamp says haughtily.

"See? I provide an important service. And also light." he says, perking up and shining his light around the room, making a point to avoid John this time. "I bet there's some deeper meaning to that irony."

"She's a powerful yokai. Unless you went into their world you can only banish her back to her realm. It will be a long time before she is strong enough to try and force her way into this world again."

"That's really hard to tell. If enough dead spirits are send her way it could be sooner. The last time she slept for a while. A couple hundred years is a while for you humans, right?"

"I suppose that depends on how suicidal you are. I mean, technically it's not impossible. Just like it's not impossible to count all the grains of sand on a beach. The question is do you really want to try."

"If it makes you feel any better, going by a human perspective she is absolutely 100% dead. Deceased, taken behind the shed, croaked, terminated. It's just that spirits and demons are better at coming back from that sort of thing."
