Bonfire - A Fork In Reality

The Estate's meticulously kept gardens, including a hedgemaze that students have occasionally described as "sadistic" and a sizeable rose garden. Benches in shaded spots are plentiful, and the gardens are popular to study in on pleasant days.

Miranda glances at Kay as they pick up their toasting forks and choice of cylindrical, campfire-friendly meat. "Something on your mind?"

"Hmm? Oh, nah, not really. Just... wondering why you don't really want to learn how to fly. It looks fun."

"It's complicated," Miranda said, "And most of it has to do with my hangups about the future. And they seem kind of tied to how I see myself and that's not always reliable and you want your wings to be reliable." Then she confessed, "I really don't understand it myself sometimes."

"Okay... I don't wanna talk you into anything you don't feel like doing. Just seems weird, cause, well, it's flying. People dream about that. Literally."

"I know," Miranda said, stabbing her fork through a sausage and sitting down to hold it to the fire. "I just... I worry. It's stupid, but I do."

"Nah, it's not. I mean you don't wanna fall, right? I just figured your mom would be able to help you with that." she says, poking at her own sausage with her fork before finally spearing it for real.

Miranda leaned her head on Kay's shoulder and folded one wing around her. "Sorry," she said softly.

Of course that only makes Kay feel like Miranda is withdrawing from her because she said something wrong and she sullenly holds her sausage into the flames.

"I saw you signed up for the X-Team thingie." she says after the silence gets too awkward between them.

"I'm just afraid I'll get deference because of who my parents are." From the tone in her voice, the choice of 'afraid' wasn't an idle one.

"Or maybe that'll help." she says, not realizing that that probably isn't any better. She's too busy pretending to know what 'deference' means to notice though.

Miranda sighed and leaned forward, resting her head on her knees and she slowly rotated her fork in front of the fire. "I'm not keeping you from having fun, am I?"

Kay smiles and snakes her arm around Miranda's waist. "You know, you're a telepath. You could totally make people feel how you feel."

"You have to be a little more subtle than that if you want them to actually feel it. Otherwise they know it's foreign because it doesn't mesh with their thoughts. And if you think loud enough when I'm 'listening', I could probably hear your thoughts."
