Sept. 9th: The Roof is (not) on Fire

Up until recently maintained as a museum, the childhood home of the Braddock family has been pressed into service as additional housing and classroom space for the Institute. Additionally, the increased demands have led to the main ballroom being converted into a cafeteria for both the Institute and those University students on a meal plan. Student reactions have been mixed, and reports of paranormal activity are as of yet unsubstantiated.

Sept. 9th: The Roof is (not) on Fire

Postby Jean-Louise Murphy » Sun Nov 02, 2014 2:10 pm

((open thread))

It was late in the night, nearly midnight, and Murphy was on the roof. She had a stick of chalk in one hand and was dreamily drawing large, complicated circles and symbols.

Luckily, it was Britain so there was no chance it would start raining.

There was the soft sound the roof access door opening and closing behind Jean-Louise, followed by the sound of soft scraping moving towards her.

Murphy was lost in her own world. With the circle finished, she dreamily walks towards the center. She sets a large bowl filled with water in front of her.

With a small pocket knife, she cuts her thumb and holds it out above the bowl. Several small drops of blood fall into the water

"Hello," Murphy calls out to Vertie. Her voice is quiet and weary. "I did not expect company tonight."

She sits cross-legged in the circle, "Would you like me to tell your fortune?"

Vertie stood and brushed off her knees. "Think you can divine the location of a hedgehog named Knobby?"

"Well, I TOLD him to stay in my room and that I would let him loose after I got back form classes, But my brother came by and scared the Bejeebus out of him and now he's gone...Knobby, my hedgehog, not Gar. my brother."

Vertie's brow lifted. "One envelope delivered for one hedgehog location. Deal." She held out her hand for the envelope.

Murphy holds out the envelope vaguely in Vertie's direction. It's pretty clear that the girl can't see.

"Deal," Murphy says. "Do you have something that reminds you of him?"

Vertie thought a moment then searched her coat pockets, finding a few fallen spines. "Here." She traded the spines for the envelope and quickly tucked the paper into her pocket.

"Thank you," Murphy says. "Just make sure that Hannah Murphy gets that envelope."

"Now..."

Murphy pricks her finger with one of the spines and drops it into the dish. She mutters something as it rotates and drifts gently in the water. Eventually, it comes to a stop.

"...Your friend will be found in that direction. I hope that is helpful, my sweet child."

"It's more then I had before... thanks and umm...be nice to the girl...she seems like she's nice...'kay?" Vertie made a polite nod, she and Gar had seen odd things before and this was one of the oddest, but she moved along the roof in the direction indicated. Not finding Knobby, she would head down stairs and continue on the ground.

Murphy smiles enigmatically before closing her eyes. Her body slumps over and before long she's fast asleep.

In the sky, the waxing gibbous moon watches.

Vivienne had been up reading and had felt the "pull" of magic. She followed it out and to the roof of the high school dorm building where she found Jean-Louise in the circle. She looked over it a moment before she closed her eyes and extended her hand and called the water from within the bowl, pulling it to her along the ground and through the lines of the symbol. Once the water pooled onto her hand she walked into the broken circle and replaced it the sphere into the bowl and knelt to check the sleeping girl.

"Child, wake. This is no place for you." She lightly touched Jean-Louise's cheek.
