Haley kept her head down and ate her sandwich in silence for a good minute after the glare, feeling oddly unsettled by the older girl's glare.

"So...uh...when did you wanna try and go shopping, Brigid?" she finally asked, looking back across the table with a tentative smile.

"Fine," Murphy says. She didn't feel fine. Vertie could read Murphy like an open book and the girl was feeling very protective of Brigid.

"Telepathy is...weird. So much like. Metaphor and twisting your brain weird ways just to avoid hearing what everyone around you is thinking. And people look at you funny cuz they wonder if you're snooping in their brain. And sometimes you are and its so shitty because I don't want to hear people thinking all unfiltered and shit. Think about all the times you like...want to say something but then that voice in the back of your head says "oh hell no, don't say that, that'll get you slapped." I used to hear all that shit all the time before I got a little bit better at all this shit."
