"You need food to live. A cheeseburger is an indulgence. You eat it because the taste is pleasurable," Maya says. "The same reason people smoke. It makes them feel good."

"And why is it dumb to be happy? I mean, I wish I could be happy. Instead of, you know, terrified all the time."

Maya glances at the bookshelves, trying to push away the fear that they could fall over and crush Barbara. That probably wouldn't happen. Probably.

Right.

"Would you like to go get coffee? Somewhere...outside? Of here?" Maya stammers quickly.

Barbara blinked a little at the change of subject, then nodded. "Sure...I haven't drank much coffee, but I hear good things about it."

Maya turns around and throws the book back into the store. Not the most ideal solution, but she was long used to compromising between various shades of crazy.

Once outside, Maya stops rushing and takes a breath, trying to convince her brain that the danger has passed.

"Sorry about that," Maya mumbles. She sounds a little embarrassed.
