Second Time With Charm

Melissa had finally gotten her car and decided it was time for that date she'd promised Gar. As she pulled away from the school, throwing the car into gear, she smiled at him, "Ground rule for tonight. I don't need to talk about my mother and I'm sure you don't want to talk about your family, so they're off limits. Agreed?" She was dressed well for a casual restaurant, but maybe a bit obviously trying not to overdo it.

"Deal." he said as he adjusted the seat. "No family." He'd cleaned up well, new shirt and perfect grooming, heck he even let Vertie put some sort of product in his hair.

"Things improving for you? I know you were looking to make yourself a little scarce the last time we were out."

"I don't think I'll ever be the belle of the ball, but I am rethinking that hermitage in the hills idea. You? Any luck finding a "thing" that can be all yours?"

"Working on it. Talked to the Headmistress about doing some telepathic tutoring for the high schoolers. Haven't actually had a tutoring session yet, but it's something. Sort of feels like giving back, you know?"

"Feels good to be doing something on your own terms. So, before the glorious and glittering Maldon, you ever travel?"

"A couple of vacations. Once to Alaska, once to Washington DC," she said. "I'm not as widely travelled as my image would project."

"I generally avoided large cities unless there was, "business". D.C.'s temptation won, I love a good museum. I could spend a life time in the Smithsonian complexes."

"If tonight goes well and you aren't tired of me by then, we can go to some of the museums in London. Seems like it would make a nice trip."

"That sounds like a plan. Last time I was on this side of the "pond" it was business, not much fun. So what's on board for tonight? Am I dressed right?"

"I was thinking steak. Nothing fancy. Did I pick right?"

"Sounds great. I'm not very complicated am I?" Gar chuckled.

"For all I knew, you could have been a secret vegan," Melissa said with a laugh. "But I thought it was a safe bet." She pulled up in front of a restaurant that had a somewhat rustic facade. "Small place, should be pretty private," she said, getting out of the car.

"With these teeth? I was mostly referring to feeding me in general." He grinned. "It looks nice, smells wonderful too."

"Hence the 'secret' part. No one would ever guess with those teeth," she said with a laugh. Once inside, it looked like it was an older house that had been converted into a restaurant, small and intimate, but not formal. They had no problem getting seated and getting their orders placed. Apparently Melissa had phoned ahead.

"I have some news, I've found some work." He smiled as a server brought in food for another table and Gar's head followed the plates. "Oo, have to try that another time." He rumbled.

"There a mobile Dj in town, I'll be doing his set up and striking down. I've also go a gig with a local grocer who needs a driver, delivery guy."

"It feels good, far fewer injuries then my previous 'education' experience. Not sure about a major, I'm not sure XU has what I'll need for what I'm secretly wanting to do."

"So w'ere back to that secret vegan thing again, huh?" She teased.

"Close." he winked. "But I am tired of 'rawr'..." He flexed his hands and grinned at her. "I want something a little different for a while. Culinary school maybe. I like food and with a nose like mine, I think I could make a good go of it."

"Yeah, I don't think the university has that department, but depending on where you want to take it, you might consider some of the business courses."

"I think I'll stick around, just to see what other great ideas you may have." He smiled at her then at his plate.

"Isn't that what women say they truly want? At least in public." He gave her a smirk as he started on his meal.

"Well, since we're on the subject of what I want," she said, contemplating her food. "Right now, I'm not looking for forever. If forever happens, that's wonderful, but I don't necessarily need it right now. I just want someone fun to be with. Cool with you?"

"Traveling the way I did, I've come to love what's commonly referred to as 'peasant foods'. No flash, just good solid everyday meals."

"With my nose, may not be so hard. Think of soul food, it started out rough cuts of meat, left over greens but people started catching on. Over the years every family has their take on it, adding a bit of this a bit of that. You start with something so simple and you end up with an actually restaurant that specializes in nothing but grilled cheese sandwiches."

"A fair point," she said after some thoughtful contemplation while chewing her food. Her foot tapped his. "I would hope you wouldn't specialize in grilled cheese."

"Nah, might have day for it, in the winter, with soups. I'd like to bring out some really old, old world recipes. Show those off to the world." He couldn't help and smiled at her again. "If you think toast and cheese is odd, I saw one the served cereal. Boxed cereal and only cereal."

"There's something somewhere for each person, no matter how strange their tastes," she said, "but I couldn't see myself going to a boxed cereal restaurant."

"Granted they have those hard to find and discontinued boxes people go all nuts for, still. You'd have to be in the right mood and maybe high." Gar looked thoughtful for a moment then shrugged and turned back to his plate.
