Melissa sat at one of the tables in the Rose & Crown, fiddling with what looked like a new smartphone. Most of a glass of beer sat next to her on the table, apparently forgotten as she fidgeted with the device.

Melissa stiffened slightly, but said cordially enough, "New phone. Always a pain to set up."

"Surely, it can't be that complicated."

"Well, it's like a new pair of shoes. You have to get it back to just the way you like it, so that it's comfortable and usable," she said, smiling over her shoulder at Altamira.

Mira stared blankly for a moment, before smiling and nodding.

"Oh, I see. That makes sense, I suppose. I've never had a phone like that, so perhaps I'm neither hip nor with it."

"I suppose having the universe at your beck and call negates the need for a phone," Melissa chuckled.

"Probably not in the way you do, no. The phone's really only as complicated as you want to make. Me, I track a lot of stuff on my phone, so it gets kind of complicated."

"There's some weird stuff in London. And a couple of stories about my mother's exploits in Miami. I suppose in the grand scheme of things it depends on what you define as 'interesting'."

"My mother apprehending some low-lifes, busting up a drug shipment. So it looks like the family business is still running strong in my absence."

"Mid-40s," Melissa said, "But in really good shape. I suppose there's no reason to worry, but that doesn't stop me, even if she is being difficult right now."

"She found out about the guy I've been going out with. That's why the new phone," Melissa said, waving the phone for emphasis. "New phone number that she doesn't have."

Melissa blinked, "I... um... don't think she's desperate enough for that yet. Give her a couple years. Right now she's more concerned about his 'earnings potential'. Like I've had time to get that serious with anyone."

"Mother has been very savvy in how she manages her image and I payed attention, so we're well off, but I don't know that I'd say 'a lot'."

"Not really. I mean, that's really not a factor for me. He's fun to hang out with and I trust him to look out for me. I'm not really looking for more at the moment."

"I'm her daughter, she doesn't trust my judgment." She shrugged, "It's my life, not hers. That's a part of why I'm here."
