I12DT - Getting under her skin

Having called ahead, Samantha had requested the Muir staff transfer 'Melpomene' to the medical suites for the examination. After touching down with Victoria at the landing strip, she made her way in.

Mel was waiting in the room. Not that she could have done much else, strapped to the bed. As usual her face seems to light up when Sam walks through the door.

"Sammy!"

Victoria followed Sam in, looking the woman over. Whether or not she was, she at least looked unimpressed as she surveyed the woman.

She doesn't immediately lash out, instead carefully probing Victoria's surface thoughts. She's certainly decent, maybe even decent enough to test Victoria's mental defenses but she's certainly no omega level telepath. Not by a long shot.

Victoria's surface thoughts aren't exactly telling... she's obviously curious about the woman, and considering a few innocent theories.

It's almost like someone's staying ahead of her and cleaning up the thoughts from scrutiny.

"Are you saying we should stop?" Victoria mused, taking a step back from the woman as she prepared to work a spell.

She glanced at Sam. "Can you help me pull this bed out a bit? Just a foot from the wall."

"I've been threatened by much scarier things than you appear to be, darling," Victoria said. She helped Sam situate the bed, then made sure she had clear floor to work with before she began spreading salt in a circle around it.

"She did, actually!" Victoria said, conversationally. "It was impressive, I do have to admit."

She finished the circle of salt, and her whole demeanor changed. An unfelt wind seemed to blow her hair, and her eyes seemed to somehow glow black (as impossible as that seemed). Her arms spread out as the incantation came to her mind, spoken as if by a double voice as she tried to pierce the metaphysical veils to see what oddness was being worked.

At first, nothing seems to happen. Then, slowly, Mel's arms and hands seem to grow younger as the glamour covering them falls away. Her face seems to stay the same, though at a closer look it's almost as if there's the faintest 'seam', almost looking more like a crinkle in her skin.

For a moment it looks like there's some kind of movement under her skin but it must have been a trick of the light because of course her face moves when she talks.

"Did you just come here to mock me?" she says, sounding just a tad repetitive.

Victoria frowned. "Some sort of golem, perhaps? Maybe... a puppet extension of her will?"

She laid a hand on the woman's forehead, trying to track a connection between this body and any controlling or animating force.

Nothing. Well, nothing beyond the human mind she can sense inside her. There's something else there, but it's slippery like one of those squiggly lines in your eye and it's definitely not controlling her in any way.

She frowned, as she tuned in on what the witch was seeing.

"It's like it's... a costume. A mask..."

"She sent me a message with the murdered girl. Had her clutching her face to her head like it was a mask. I assumed she was making it obvious that the Muse of Tragedy did this... but what if she meant something else?"
