I13DT: Missing Something

Postby Drew Burke » Mon Apr 21, 2014 8:22 pm

Andrew Burke had been at Muir Island for as long as he could remember. Every day, he had the same routine. He would get up and take his medicine. Then he would get dressed and eat breakfast. If the weather was nice, he would go for a walk afterwards. If not, he would start studying immediately. He was an excellent student.

After lunch, Drew would practice power control. At the end of the day, he was evaluated for progress. After dinner, he would read a book until it was time to go to bed.

He had no reason to believe that today would be any different.

During lunch two orderlies are standing line behind him, gossiping, from the sound of it.

"Can you believe that? Cleared out the whole damn wing. We've been moving patients all morning. It's a pain in the ass."

"Yeah, well, you'd rather be on the second floor right now? We're the ones who get to handle all those extra people. Somehow."

"Fair enough. Least they could do is tell us what's going on though."

"I heard they're moving someone over from the detention center for evaluation."

"Come on, they do that all the time and the worst that happens is there's a shit-load of guards blocking the hallways."

"I dunno. I talked to Anne and she said some of the other guards are kinda freaked out. Spontaneous power manifestation or something, I bet."

"You'd think they knew how to handle that."

"She said they're not sure but that word from on high was to take no chances."

Drew keeps his head down, pretending not to notice. It was rude to eavesdrop.

"One of the Omegas then."

"Yeah, the one that thinks she's some kinda Greek Goddess or something. Melo-something or other. Melomene?"

"What happened to more straight-forward names, huh? Juggernaut. Bam, you know what he does just from his name."

"Guess all the good ones are taken." the woman chuckles. "Oh! Melpomene, that was it."

Why does that sound so familiar?

It bothered Drew. He felt like he had forgotten something important.

He stood up and walked towards the door. He felt nervous and he didn't know why.

"No cafeteria food outside the dining hall, dear." the guard at the door tells him, glancing at the food tray in Drew's hands. Apparently security was pretty touchy today.

Drew nods and puts the tray away, throwing away any leftovers. He wasn't hungry.

He returned to the door for inspection.

After a quick pat-down the guard waves him through. "Go on ahead."

Outside there seems to be a lot of activity going on down the hall. A row of armed security personnel is walking down the corridor towards the elevators.

They're taking up post next to the elevator while another group is coming down the corridor, escorting what appears to be someone in a hospital bed. One of the guards notices Drew and walks up to him, mumbling to himself. "Thought they were all supposed to be at lunch..."

"Hey, stand back, we're transferring one of the prisoners. You should probably just head back to the dining hall." he says once he reaches him. He's clearly trying to position himself between Drew and the procession of armed guards that's approaching.

"Hey, come on, don't cause any trouble." the guard says, he's clearly nervous. Meanwhile the escort is passing by them and it's clear that the person on the bed is strapped down, wearing an inhibitor collar and appears to be unconscious. It's hard to tell from this distance but it seems to be a woman with medium-length black hair. It almost seems like the covers are pulled over her face. Or maybe like someone placed a white mask on her. There's a strange air of familiarity about her despite that. Like that song you just can't quite remember how it went.

Man, I hope they hurry up with their MRI scans upstairs. This whole thing's messed up. the guard's thoughts echo after Drew along with his sense of relief. Meanwhile the other guards along with the woman on the bed disappear into the elevator.

There was something wrong. Drew could feel it. The tense guards and the strange woman felt like a promise. They were expected, he didn't know why, but nothing about this seemed strange or surprising at all.

He had to find out who it was. Drew ducked out of sight and shifted into one of the guards. Then, after checking to make sure the coast was clear, he made his way towards the elevator.

One guard is left standing outside the elevator. When he sees Drew approach he looks a little confused and very annoyed. "Weren't you supposed to go up with the rest?"

Damnit Hank, you're gonna get your ass fired for this shit one of these days. How hard is it to go an hour without a bloody smoke, mate.

Upstairs the floor was empty. After a couple moments the group of guards that escorted the woman step out of the room with the MRI machine. One of them stay at the door, the other are heading to the nurses' station.

Inside is the MRI control room and behind a big window and through another door is the prisoner. She's been transferred to the stretcher that slides into the machine and hooked up to an IV of, presumably, anesthetics. The woman is breathing shallowly and from here Drew can tell that it's indeed a mask of some sort that has been placed on her face.

Drew's eyes widen at the sight of the mask. He takes a deep breath, trying to steady himself.

I need to see her. I need to wake her up.

Drew walks to the door, trying to look as calm and natural as possible. Just a nurse, checking on an IV.

The room is empty except for him and the woman and no one bursts through the door to stop him. As he gets closer to the woman Drew would notice that something is strange about the mask. It's impossible to tell what material it's made of and it almost looks like it's nostrils are flaring ever so slightly with every shallow breath the woman takes.

There's no direct response but the woman stirs at the sound of Drew's voice. It seems the sedation is slowly wearing off.

Drew looks over his shoulder for a moment, making sure no one is watching. Then he starts removing the IV.

It's okay. I'm only getting her name. If I can find out her name, everything will be alright.

It feels like it's taking forever when in reality it's probably a minute at most, but eventually the woman's eyes flutter open. She shakily tries to get up when her eyes settle on Drew, then dart around the room quickly before settling back on him.

"Who are you?"
