A bit later in the open house, Brigid had broken off from the larger gathering. It might, might have been because her father was wandering around.

"At least he wore pants today," she muttered.

Alex was similarly avoiding his mother. Not because she was particularly embarassing or anything (any more than any other 16-year-old's parents, at least), but he didn't need to listen to more conversations turned into legal or political discussions.

His head turned at the voice. "Didn't think it was until college that pants being on started being a question," he mused.

She startled a bit at the voice, whipping about a little too quickly to face its source before turning beet red.

"Er... yeah! Uhm... which is why that isn't what I said! Because that would be really crazy!"

"Yeah, talking to my mom can feel like a ten round boxing match sometimes," Alex mused, shaking his head. Wonder what's up with that? "So where are you from, then?" he asked, not able to place her accent but figuring it had to be somewhere out west where there were non-civilized areas.
