Soak up the sun (open)

Postby Victoria Valentine » Tue Jun 26, 2012 5:00 am

The last few hot days at the end of summer had to be appreciated. The sky was clear, the sun was hot, the water was cool, and by Goddess, Victoria was going to enjoy it. So around the time that classes were ending on the first day of class, Victoria was lying on a towel on the dock at the pond. She wore a bikini and sunglasses, the barbed wire tattoos generously displayed along her upper body as she lay there, a radio nearby playing as she dozed in the afternoon sun.

After a while she'd feel like she was being watched. Not that it was that hard to make out the two big eyes bobbing in the water even before Kay waves at her, dives back underwater and after a couple seconds surfaces again next to the dock.

"Hi!"

Victoria looked over and grinned. "Oh good, and here I thought I'd have to go all day without company," she said, rolling onto her side.

"Not too many people come out here." she nods, though from her it sounds like bit of an upside.

"Mmm, so I noticed. Nice for a while, but it ends up getting too quiet, I think."

"So... first day of class go well?"

"Well, that depends on the kind of stares that you get," Victoria said with a playful smirk. "But yes... ten years with catty bitches in boarding schools means that I completely know what you mean."

"And... the ghosts?" she asks and it's obvious that it took her until now to built up the courage to ask about that.

"Right." she chuckles, waiting for the real answer. When it doesn't come she blinks and probably would have dropped underwater if she didn't float by herself to some degree.

"You're serious..."

She shook her head. "No. Well, there are claims that I died once, but I think it's a bunch of rubbish. Here, feel my pulse if you want," she said, holding her hand out.

Victoria rolled onto her stomach to look at Kay better. "Something like that," she said. "Magic is all around you, you just need to be attuned to be able to see a lot of it. Or just have it blatantly pointed out to you."

"Well, I'm not saying that ghosts are never going to pop up to anyone, or that you can't just stumble on things. But yes... if I hadn't been... well, drawing you in, I guess, you wouldn't have come across that. Some things you can only find if you know where they are... anyone else would have just walked through that forest and passed right by it."

"Mmmm, sort of, yes. More of... a place inside a place." She thought about it. "Have you ever seen those old pictures that you have to look at right to see the 3D image popping out at you? Something like that, you have to know to look for the place or be incredibly, incredibly lucky, for it to open up to you."

"But there aren't ghosts everywhere, right?"

"Well there's..." Victoria sighed, then reached down, reaching her hand into the water. "Just try not to freak out. Best way's to show you, let's see if I can find something cute."

"Maybe. I'm not as good with water as with forests or meadows. Have you ever thought you saw something out of the corner of your eye, then when you look there's nothing there? Or been sure you saw something weird, only to look and see that it was something else that was normal? There are always things around you... after you get used to the idea, it's not really scary... ah, here we are."

Victoria withdrew her hand, and three-inch creature was climbing up her hand. Its skin was blue and green, an obvious means of camouflaging itself in the water with the ripply patterns of color. It was vaguely humanoid in appearance, moving like a bipedal creature at least, though from the way its legs worked, it could move like a frog would as well. Its tiny fingers and toes were webbed, and gills ran down its back. It looked around with over-large black eyes, had no nose or ears to speak of, and its hair brought to mind seaweed when out of water, though in water it looked like it would be free-flowing and feathery. It climbed into Victoria's hand, looked around, and yawned with its tiny mouth. "Didn't know it would be that easy, but wherever you are, you can usually find faeries hiding."

Kay looks at the thing with the careful fascination of someone watching something cute that might still jump up and bite them.

"They're not dangerous, are they?"

Victoria shook her head. "Not unless you give it a reason to be. I mean... it was in the water with you and you didn't know it. You probably brushed against it at some time while you were swimming. Hell, it could've hitched a ride in your hair while it was tired if your hair was long enough." She ran her wet thumb along the thing's slippery head. "Not everything is nice when you finally see it, but this little guy just likes to swim."

Kay pretends not to have heard the part about not everything being nice because she likes the pond and would hate to be scared of it.

"It is pretty cute. And things that like to swim can't be too bad."

"Exactly. Things that like to swim are always good," she said with a teasing smile, dipping her hand back down to let the water sprite go. "Including sharks, if some are to be believed..." she said, rolling her eyes.
